Bittersweet Baghdad is the first documentary short from Alia Hassan, a filmmaker on the fringes of a subset of young YouTube auteurs that includes Sammy Paul, PJ Liguori and Bertie Gilbert, with whom Hassan co-directed on their Ron Howard-funded short Killed the Cat. This time around, though, Hassan is putting in all the shifts himself (directing, cinematographing and editing), and it is just as well, because only someone with such affectionate familiarity for the city – whose name is often used as a byword for the ravages of war – could produce a film like Bittersweet Baghdad.
